The police in Benue State have arrested a 20-year-old man suspected of supplying arms to bandits. His name is Joro Jarkata, and he was arrested in Guma Local Government Area.
DSP Peter Aondona, the state police spokesperson, shared this news in a statement on Friday in Makurdi. He explained that the arrest happened during a police operation on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
Police officers were doing a stop-and-search when they saw two men on a motorcycle. When they saw the police, one man jumped off and ran into the bush. The other man was Joro Jarkata, who is from Awe Local Government Area in Nasarawa State.
Aondona said police searched Jarkata and found one hundred and fifteen (115) rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition hidden on him. This information was part of his statement.
Jarkata is now in police custody. The case has been sent to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi for further investigation. Police are also looking for the man who ran away and want to find out where the ammunition came from, where it was going, and how it was moved.
The Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, praised the quick actions of the police officers involved. He said their vigilance and professionalism helped to make the arrest and recover the ammunition.
The CP also stressed that the police will continue to fight against illegal firearms and ammunition. He emphasized the need to dismantle criminal groups that threaten the safety of Benue State.
Aondona encouraged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities or people to the nearest police station.
