Operatives of the Abia State Police Command have arrested a man named Uzoma Uwaeme. He is accused of stripping, tying up, and beating his 13-year-old son under the hot sun in Aba, Abia State.
The Abia State Police Command shared this news in a statement on Wednesday. They said the man is the boy's biological father. The boy's mother is said to have left the marriage.
The arrest followed a viral video on social media. The video showed the teenager tied up, hurt, and left in harsh weather.
After seeing the video, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, ordered police from the Abayi Divisional Police Headquarters to find and arrest Uwaeme at his home on Nwokocha Street, off Udeabara Road, Aba.
The police confirmed the arrest in their statement. DSP Maureen Chinaka, the command’s spokesperson, said the teenager has been rescued and is receiving medical care.
"The case has been moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation, as the suspect is now in police custody.
The victim has gotten medical help, is in stable condition, and is now under the protection of the police," Chinaka said.
CP Afolabi condemned the father's actions. He called it inhumane, barbaric, and a serious violation of the child's rights.
"He emphasized that the Command will not tolerate any form of child abuse or domestic violence. He promised that the suspect will face legal action," the statement said.
The Command also asked the public to stay alert and report any cases of abuse or crime to the nearest police station or through the Command’s direct contact lines.
