The Edo State Police Command has started an investigation into a clash between the Edo State Traffic Management Agency and the Intelligence Response Team.

This action comes after a video was posted on X on Thursday. The video shows officers from both agencies, with one IRT officer firing his rifle into the air.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, CP Patrick Daaor, spoke with representatives from both sides. He has ordered an investigation to find out what happened during the incident.

"The Commissioner of Police has also directed that the conduct of the officer seen firing the rifle be subjected to appropriate disciplinary review," the statement noted.

The command emphasized that it "does not, and will not, condone any act of indiscipline, unprofessional conduct or abuse of police powers by any of its personnel."

"Any officer, irrespective of the agency, found culpable after due investigation will be appropriately sanctioned in line with extant laws and regulations," the statement added.

The command also highlighted that it values "a high premium on inter-agency collaboration and mutual respect among security and government agencies." It pointed out that public safety relies on agencies working together professionally towards shared goals.

"The incident is therefore being treated with the seriousness it deserves, without prejudice to the established working relationship between the Edo State Police Command and EDSTMA," the statement concluded.

The command has advised the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands. Instead, they should report any police misconduct through its Complaint Response Unit.
