The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has started repairs on four damaged towers along the Afam/IPP/Elelenwo 132-Kilovolt (kV) Double-Circuit Transmission Line in Rivers State.
The company’s management shared this news in a statement from Abuja on Wednesday night.
The towers, marked T50, T51, T52, and T53, were found to be damaged on 6 August by TCN's linesmen.
A closer look showed that important bracing parts had been taken from the towers. This has put the strength of all four towers at risk.
“After this discovery, TCN quickly sent a contractor to the site to handle the repairs.
“A formal handover ceremony took place on Tuesday by the Port Harcourt Transmission Region to kick off the rehabilitation works,” the statement noted.
During the handover, Azu Lucky, head of Lines for Port Harcourt Transmission Region, spoke on behalf of TCN management. He stressed the need for the local community to help protect the transmission infrastructure.
Mr Lucky urged the people of Elelenwo, their traditional leaders, and the local government chairman to join TCN in fighting against vandalism as the repair work moves forward.
He added that ongoing community awareness and cooperation are key to stopping more vandalism.
“We understand the danger that vandalism of these towers brings to the steady supply of electricity along the line.
“The company will do everything it can to finish the repairs on time.
“TCN asks the people of Elelenwo and nearby areas to support the ongoing repair efforts and to stay alert against vandalism around transmission facilities,” he stated.
He mentioned that community cooperation is vital for protecting the repaired towers and ensuring reliable power supply along the line.
