Tanker accident blocks major road in Anambra

There was panic on the Onitsha-Owerri Road at Upper Iweka after a 40ft tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit fell by the roadside. This accident blocked traffic and raised fears of an explosion among drivers and residents nearby.

The accident happened late on Thursday. Reports say a bad part of the road caused the tanker to lose control and overturn.

Thankfully, there were no injuries reported. But the incident caused heavy traffic, leading authorities to block the affected lane and redirect vehicles. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to stop any possible fire.

The Anambra State Fire Service quickly arrived at the site. They sprayed water around the tanker to reduce any risk of fire.

Eyewitnesses said the driver lost control while trying to navigate the bad road. The tanker then fell off the road.

"This situation caused panic and blocked the road. Residents and traders nearby moved away while drivers avoided the area to prevent fire or other emergencies," one eyewitness told our reporter.

Chukwudi Chiketa, the Head of Media and Publicity for the Anambra State Fire Service, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday. He said firefighters and their equipment were quickly sent to the scene to manage the situation.

Chiketa stated, "The Anambra State Fire Service wants to inform the public that a tanker fell at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, on Thursday, 11th September 2026. The Fire Service got the distress call and sent firefighters to the accident site right away.

"A preliminary check showed that a bad part of the road caused the accident.

"Fire Service personnel began salvage and removal efforts to secure the area and help clear the road safely.

"These efforts were successful, and we managed to contain the situation."

He also noted that the Fire Service will keep monitoring the area and work with other agencies to ensure safety and prevent future problems.

"No injuries or casualties were reported. We advise the public, especially drivers, to stay alert and be careful around the affected area. For more information, contact the Anambra State Fire Service at 08069654255," the statement added.
