Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has stated that he is not desperate to become Nigeria’s president in 2027. He said his main goal is to see Nigeria succeed, no matter who is in charge.
Obi shared his thoughts during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. He explained that his ambition comes from wanting to change the country, not just to have a public position.
When asked if his mission to "fix Nigeria" meant he would leave politics if he did not win the presidency in 2027, Obi responded, “That’s not the idea. I’ve always said that I am not desperate to become President of Nigeria. I am desperate to see Nigeria work. If it is working, I will support whatever makes it work.”
The former Labour Party presidential candidate also mentioned that he would back anyone who can help the country progress.
“So if Nigeria is working, I’ll support whatever makes it work. I want to see a country where a child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody, where we can put people out of poverty, where young people will have the opportunity to live, get jobs, be diplomats and participate in what young people do all over the world,” he said.
Obi emphasized that Nigeria’s development is more important to him than holding the highest office in the country.
“It doesn’t matter if Peter Obi is the president or not. So far, Nigeria is good; I’m fine with it,” he said.
When asked if he would be open to serving in another role, like a minister, Obi said, “I don’t even need to hold any office.”
Despite this, he insisted that he is running for president because he believes he can tackle the country’s problems.
“I’m contesting because I believe that I will fix it. I will unite the country and be able to show an example of what is possible,” Obi said.
