A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, Ibraheem Adekunle, has warned against any attempt to replace him as the party’s candidate for the Osun Central Senatorial District in the 2027 elections.
This warning comes after the current senator for the District, Olubiyi Fadeyi, announced on Thursday that he has returned to the PDP and is now the party’s candidate for the 2027 elections.
According to reports, Fadeyi had, in July 2026, along with four other National Assembly members, moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and took part in the party’s primary in May.
The primary committee announced Kunle Adegoke as the winner, despite protests from Fadeyi and his supporters.
Speaking to journalists in Osogbo on Friday, Adekunle insisted he is the officially nominated PDP candidate for Osun Central Senatorial District in the upcoming elections.
Adekunle claimed he became the candidate through a properly conducted primary election. He stated he is ready to seek legal action if anyone tries to interfere with his nomination.
"It has been claimed that Senator Olubiyi Fadeyi obtained a waiver from the Peoples Democratic Party on 8 May 2026. However, records show that he later participated in the APC senatorial primary election on 18 May 2026 for the same position.
"This raises a fundamental question: if he became a PDP member through the alleged waiver on 8 May, how did he buy APC nomination forms, submit APC nomination documents, go through APC screening, campaign as an APC candidate, and take part in the APC primary election just ten days later? You can't be a member of two parties at the same time. These issues need a clear legal explanation," Adekunle said.
He added that by the time Senator Fadeyi took part in the APC primary election, the PDP had already completed all its nomination processes for the Osun Central Senatorial District.
He said, "My name was officially submitted by the PDP to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the primary and was uploaded on the Commission’s nomination portal according to the law. I remain the authentic and officially nominated PDP candidate for Osun Central Senatorial District.
"I have full confidence in the National Working Committee of our party and in Chief Nyesom Wike, a respected leader of the PDP. I trust they will uphold the law, respect due process, and protect the integrity of the party’s primary election.
"I want to inform everyone involved that I will strongly defend my mandate and challenge any attempt to unlawfully replace my name with someone who did not come from the PDP primary election."
