Labour Party chair calls for unity ahead of 2027 elections

The Labour Party is asking Nigeria’s politicians to focus on issue-based campaigns, patriotism, and tolerance as the 2027 general elections approach.

The party also warned against divisive politics that could harm national unity.

Senator Nenadi Usman, the party’s National Chairman, made this statement on Saturday. She spoke with journalists during the 80th birthday celebration of former Plateau State Governor and former Governor of old Benue State, Senator Jonah Jang, in Jos.

Her comments come as political parties start consultations and realignments ahead of the next elections. This comes amid rising debates about the tone and direction of political discussions in the country.

Ken Asogwa, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, shared Usman’s comments in a statement from Abuja.

Usman emphasized that while competition is an important part of democracy, it should not lead to bitterness, hatred, or actions that can weaken the country’s unity.

She said, “The next election should not be a battle against fellow Nigerians. It should be a contest of ideas, competence and character. When elections are over, we must all return to the same Nigeria. That is why patriotism must always be greater than politics.”

The LP chair noted that Nigerians need leaders who will unite them, inspire hope instead of fear, and build connections across political, ethnic, and religious lines.

She added, “Our political parties may be different, but our country is one. We owe future generations the responsibility of conducting politics without destroying the bonds that hold our nation together.”

Usman also called for more civility in Nigeria’s political environment. She urged politicians and their supporters to avoid inflammatory language and to treat each other with respect.

“History does not remember those who shouted the loudest. It remembers those who built the strongest institutions, protected democracy and put their country first.”

She further stated that democracy can only succeed where dialogue is more important than intolerance. She stressed that political disagreements should strengthen democratic institutions rather than threaten unity.

“We must disagree without becoming enemies. Democracy flourishes where there is tolerance, respect for differing opinions and an unwavering commitment to peace.”

Reflecting on the event, Usman called Jang a patriot. She said his years of service in the military and in democratic governance have earned him a respected place in Nigeria’s history.

She noted that his career showed discipline, courage, sacrifice, and dedication to the nation, first as a military officer and later as Governor of Plateau State and a senator.

“At 80, Senator Jonah Jang represents a generation of leaders whose lives remind us that public office is ultimately about service, honour and legacy. We celebrate not only his longevity but also his enduring contributions to nation-building.”

Usman also prayed for God’s blessings on the elder statesman. She wished him good health, strength, and many more years of service to the nation.
