The Kebbi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has rejected claims that it endorsed Governor Nasir Idris of the All Progressives Congress for the 2027 governorship election. The party insists it is united and focused on its own candidates.
This statement comes after a group of PDP supporters in Birnin Kebbi showed support for Idris’ re-election.
The group, led by former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (retd.), included other notable political figures. They said they decided to support Idris because of his performance and dedication to developing the state.
But in a statement shared with journalists on Sunday, the PDP State Chairman, Alhaji Usman Suru, said this declaration does not reflect the party’s official stance.
“The Kebbi State PDP denies and rejects the rumour that it is supporting the APC and the APC governorship candidate in Kebbi State in the upcoming 2027 election,” Suru stated.
He described the PDP as “one and united” and confirmed that the party is dedicated to its own candidates as the 2027 general elections approach.
Suru urged party members and supporters to ignore any reports that suggest the PDP has turned its back on its political platform or adopted the APC candidate.
“I advise PDP members to focus on uniting the people and ignore all false and baseless rumours being spread by those who want to create confusion. Such people have no power over the PDP in Kebbi State,” he said.
The chairman added that the party has candidates for the state House of Assembly in all 21 local government areas, the House of Representatives in all eight federal constituencies, and the Senate in the three senatorial districts.
He also mentioned that the party has a governorship candidate, emphasizing that the PDP is an independent and fully established political group in the state.
Meanwhile, at the gathering where support for Governor Idris was shown, Bamaiyi stated that the group's decision was due to what he called the governor’s visible achievements and commitment to infrastructure development.
“For the 2027 elections, we are now fully committed to the victory of Governor Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu,” Bamaiyi stated.
He clarified that the group would stay within the PDP, saying that the endorsement was a decision made by the involved stakeholders and not an official resolution from the state chapter.
Also speaking, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Buhari Bala, mentioned that the group’s decision came after evaluating the governor’s performance and leadership.
“We cannot sit idle when we see what we consider patriotic and selfless leadership,” Bala said.
This situation comes as political activities heat up ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi. A faction of PDP stakeholders is backing the current governor while the state party leadership maintains that the PDP has not endorsed Idris or abandoned its own candidate.
