US Lifts Restrictions on Nigerian Vessels to Boost Shipping

The US Government has announced that it has removed security restrictions on ships from Nigeria. This move will improve shipping operations between Nigeria and the US.

It is also expected to lower shipping costs and strengthen trade relations.

In a letter dated August 26, US Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia praised Nigeria for its “sustained” reforms that led to the end of the 12-year restrictions. The letter was sent to Adegboyega Oyetola, Nigeria's Minister of Marine and Blue Economy.

Mr Garcia called the removal of US restrictions proof of Nigeria’s “sustained strengthening of port security and anti-terrorism compliance.”

“Please allow me to join you in welcoming the U.S. Coast Guard’s decision to lift the 12-year security restriction on Nigerian-flagged vessels calling at American ports,” the letter stated.

“This achievement reflects Nigeria’s sustained strengthening of port security and anti-terrorism compliance. We are pleased that this milestone will reduce security-related requirements and associated costs for vessels operating between our two countries. It will also improve turnaround times and schedule reliability,” it continued.

The Marine Ministry mentioned that it lifted the Condition of Entry (CoE) for vessels arriving in the US from Nigeria last month. This CoE required additional security checks for ships that had visited certain Nigerian ports within their last five stops.

Mr Oyetola said this change has ended the 12-year period of strict security requirements for vessels at Nigerian ports. He linked the removal of restrictions to the focus on the marine and blue economy as part of the country's economic plans.

He credited President Bola Tinubu’s leadership for achieving this milestone.

“With the Condition of Entry now removed, Nigerian ports are better positioned to compete for international shipping business. Shipping lines operating between Nigeria and the United States will benefit from lower security-related costs, fewer procedural burdens, improved turnaround times, and greater schedule reliability,” he said.
