University kicks out two students for being gay

The management of Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in Osara, Kogi State, has expelled two students for allegedly being involved in gay activities.

In a statement released on Friday, the university’s Information and Public Relations Unit confirmed that expulsion letters were sent to the students. The letters were signed by Eli Gbadafu, the Deputy Registrar (Academics).

The statement explained that the disciplinary actions followed rules in the Students’ Handbook, Second Edition, which was updated in 2025.

The students who were expelled are Onumoko Hamza from Biology Education and Abdulazeez Eneji from Mining Engineering.

“The disciplinary measures were approved at the 31st Regular Meeting of the University Senate, held at the Faculty of Law Lecture Theatre. This was after the Senate considered recommendations from the Students’ Disciplinary Committee,” the management said.

The university did not provide details about when or where the alleged offenses took place.

In Nigeria, homosexual relationships are against the law. The country’s anti-gay law came into effect in January 2014 during Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency. This law punishes anyone convicted of same-sex sexual acts with up to 14 years in prison.

The federal government enforced the law in December 2019. That was when 47 men were arrested by police in a Lagos hotel the year before for allegedly showing same-sex affection.

All 47 men pleaded not guilty and were given bail. Later, a federal judge dismissed the charges due to the police not handling the case properly.
