The University of Jos Alumni Association has urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the mob killing of one of their own, Ibrahim Mbaya.
PUNCH Metro reports that this tragic event took place on Sunday at an off-campus apartment behind the City of David area along Ring Road in Jos, Plateau State.
The Plateau State Police confirmed the incident. They stated that three suspects were arrested. The suspects are Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear, and Nensemka Fwanji. They are linked to the alleged killing of Mbaya.
Mbaya was a model based in Jos. He had gone to a social event before deciding to spend the night at a friend's place since it was too late to go home. He was also said to be sorting out an academic issue at the University of Jos.
Reports say that the next morning, Mbaya's friend told him that an iPhone was missing. The friend accused him of stealing it since they were the only two in the apartment. Although Mbaya initially left, he came back after being called to explain the situation.
Upon his return, police reported that he was confronted by his friend and a group of young men. They accused him of being the thief. Witnesses claimed that the group beat him with sticks and other items for several hours, trying to force him to confess, until he lost consciousness.
A nurse who examined him later confirmed that he had died. One of the suspects was even seen in a viral video hitting Mbaya with a large wooden plank.
On Tuesday, the alumni association released a statement condemning the incident. They described it as “barbaric, unjustifiable, and a gross violation of the right to life.”
The association stated that Mbaya, a graduate of the University of Jos, was beaten to death by a mob under unclear circumstances. “We are deeply saddened and outraged by the gruesome killing of our colleague and brother, Ibrahim Mbaya,” the statement said.
The alumni added, “No Nigerian deserves to die in such a manner, irrespective of any allegation against them.” They called on the authorities to speed up investigations into the incident, arrest everyone involved, and ensure that those responsible face the law.
“We demand justice for Ibrahim Mbaya. The rule of law must prevail and not mob action,” the association emphasized. They also urged the police to make the results of their investigation public.
The group further asked the government to increase public awareness about the dangers of jungle justice. They called for better protection of lives and property.
“This incident should serve as a wake-up call for all of us. We must collectively reject mob killings and allow due process to take its course,” the statement concluded.
The association also expressed condolences to Mbaya's family, promising to support them in their pursuit of justice.
