United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, known as Africa's Global Bank, has confirmed its status as a top financial institution on the continent. UBA was named Nigeria's Best Bank for Retail and Sustainability Leadership (ESG) at the 2026 Euromoney Awards for Excellence.

The awards ceremony took place on Thursday, 17 July 2026, at The Peninsula in London, UK. This event celebrates banks that show great financial results, innovation, customer impact, and business practices that are good for the environment.

Receiving these two awards highlights UBA's role in promoting sustainable finance while providing innovative banking services to millions across Africa.

Euromoney noted that UBA set itself apart with strong efforts in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. This includes launching a Green Financing Facility to help households and businesses move to renewable energy. UBA also started a ₦5 billion financing program with the Bank of Industry to support women-owned businesses. The bank has a goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

The publication praised UBA for integrating sustainability into its operations. It mentioned the use of solar energy solutions at 50 branches and training over 16,000 employees across the Group on ESG practices.

In the retail banking category, UBA received recognition for its growth as one of Africa’s largest retail banking franchises. By the end of 2025, the bank’s customer base grew to over 37 million, and its retail revenue soared to ₦429.5 billion.

The awards also highlighted UBA's digital advancements, especially in improving its AI-powered chatbot, LEO. LEO became Africa’s first AI banking platform to allow cross-border money transfers in local currencies through the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS).

Oliver Alawuba, UBA’s Group Managing Director/CEO, commented on the recognition. He said it shows the bank's dedication to creating value for customers while promoting sustainable development in Africa.

“To be recognised as Nigeria’s Best Bank for both ESG and Retail Banking in the same year sends a powerful message that sustainable banking and commercial success go hand in hand.

“At UBA, we are committed to financing Africa’s future, supporting businesses and communities, promoting financial inclusion, and providing innovative banking solutions that improve lives. These awards belong to our customers for their trust in us and to every member of the UBA family whose hard work makes our vision possible.”
