President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate end of the Presidential Implementation Committee (PIC) on the Alienation of Federal Government Properties.
From now on, the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, will handle all issues related to the committee.
The PIC was created in 2000 during former President Olusegun Obasanjo's time in office. Its job was to manage the privatisation, sale, and lease of federal government lands under the government’s monetisation plan.
The committee included the Minister of Housing as Chairperson. Other members came from the Ministries of Transportation, Justice, Health, Agriculture, and the Nigeria Police Force. PT Ahire, who was a Deputy Director in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was the first Secretary. Members were chosen from both public and private sectors.
On 22 March 2001, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved a panel of inquiry. This panel was tasked with creating a White Paper to guide the implementation of the committee's recommendations. They worked for 21 months before handing in their report.
After reviewing the situation, the government found that the PIC had gone beyond its original purpose. This led to many legal issues across the country, making the committee's continued existence unnecessary.
As a result, the President has ordered the dissolution of the PIC. The Attorney General of the Federation will take over its responsibilities starting from 5 November 2025.
With the President’s order, the PIC is officially dissolved. The former Secretary, B. S Dutsin-Ma, has also been told to stop representing the committee and the federal government on any related matters.
