At least three people have been killed and two others injured in a fresh attack by suspected armed herders in Elulu and Agadagba communities in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.
Reports say the attacks occurred separately between Friday and Saturday night when the suspected armed herders invaded these communities.
A local from Agadagba, who only gave his name as Ameh, said some suspected herders attacked the village on Saturday night after hitting Elulu village the night before on Friday.
Ameh spoke to reporters on Sunday during a phone interview. He said, “The Fulani herdsmen attacked our community (Agadagba) yesterday night and tried to rustle cows. The youths fought back.
“But some of the attackers, who were well armed, shot at the youths, and two of them died. We later learned that the same Fulani herdsmen had attacked Elulu village a day earlier, killing one person.”
When contacted on Sunday, the chairman of Ohimini Local Government Area, Gabriel Adole, confirmed the two incidents to reporters.
Adole explained that the attackers invaded both Elulu and Agadagba communities between Friday and Saturday night. He said, “It is not only in Agadagba that the armed herders killed people. They first attacked Elulu village the day before yesterday (Friday), where they killed one person and attacked another, taking his Bajaj motorcycle.
“They also went to Agadagba village that same day to rustle cows, but the people fought them off. They shot one of the youths in the leg. They couldn’t take any cows from there. Then, yesterday (Saturday), they came back again and killed two people in Agadagba.”
Adole added, “As I am talking to you, I am preparing to visit the communities to pay my condolences. So far, three lives have been lost in these attacks. Two persons were injured: one whose motorcycle was taken and another who was involved in the cow rustling. Both of them are in the hospital getting treatment.”
The chairman also noted that local security personnel, together with the police, have been sent to the affected areas to prevent further attacks.
He mentioned that normalcy is slowly returning to the affected communities due to the presence of security personnel.
Ohimini LGA has faced many attacks in recent weeks. Some people believe these attacks are linked to the killing of the state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Risku Mohammed, on June 24, 2026.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the state command, DSP Udeme Edet, could not be reached for comment as her phone rang out.
