The Mokwa-Bida highway is an important federal road over 100 kilometers long. It connects drivers traveling from the Southwest to the North.
A reporter from the News Agency of Nigeria was at the scene and noticed that all entry points into Mokwa were blocked by the angry protesters.
Many travelers have been stuck since Saturday night.
One protester, Saliu Mohammed, said that suspected bandits recently kidnapped 15 people from the community.
This claim could not be independently confirmed.
He also said that security forces have not been able to rescue the victims.
Mohammed promised that the protest would continue until the victims are freed.
Joy Amaechi, a commuter traveling to Abuja from Ilorin, said she spent five hours in Mokwa with no solutions in sight.
She urged the government to act quickly to rescue the victims.
Henry Nwachuckwu, a driver with a popular mass transit company, said he got to Mokwa around 7 am on Sunday.
As of the time of this report, around 10:30 am, the protesters were still blocking the highway.
