A man in his 50s was found dead in a wheelbarrow on Aba-Owerri Road, Abia State. Passersby discovered his body, which was decomposing. It seems he was taking a nap in the barrow. This has led to a police investigation about how he died.

The body was located at Atuma House, across from St. Paul’s Church at 104 Aba-Owerri Road, Umungasi. Eyewitnesses noted that the remains had started to decompose at the time of discovery.

Tochukwu Ogbuagu posted photos of the deceased and a police letter on Facebook on Thursday. Reports on social media suggested that the man might have died while resting after a long day’s work. But authorities have not confirmed what caused his death yet.

A letter from the Abayi Police Division to the Environmental Health Department of the Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Council confirmed the situation. Okereke Amos, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for the Abayi Police Division, asked for a quick evacuation. He said the corpse was a serious public health risk.

Following the DPO's request, health officials and police officers from the Abayi Police Division moved the remains to the Abia State University Teaching Hospital at Ahiaba Umueze.

Maureen Chinaka, the police spokesperson in Abia, confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES on Friday. She said an investigation is now on to find out who the man was and how he died.

The Environmental Health Services Department of the Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area is asking the public to help identify the man.
