Sulaiman Bala, a lieutenant-commander and spokesman for the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) VICTORY, has announced that the Navy has broken up a suspected militant base in the Ine Ikoridung coastal area of Cross River State.

He mentioned that the militants used this place to cause trouble for coastal communities in the state.

In a statement on Monday, Mr Bala said no arrests were made, but some items were found during the operation.

He stated that this action is part of ongoing efforts against militants in the Dayspring area.

The troops carried out an intelligence-led raid on the coastal settlement where the militants had moved to.

"NNS VICTORY patrol gunboats arrived at the settlement, surrounded the area, and searched the huts where intelligence suggested the militants were hiding."

When the militants saw the approaching gunboats, they ran away. However, the troops found five empty cartridges, one military camouflage vest, one police camouflage vest, one military pullover, and one military jungle hut.

They also discovered a notebook with records of suspected militant fighters who have been arrested and the correctional facilities where they are serving time.

As a result, the identified huts were destroyed to prevent the criminals from using them again in the future.

Mr Bala explained that the militants moved to this remote coastal area due to the ongoing pressure from the Nigerian Navy.

He said this constant operation limited their movements and forced them to leave their previous hideouts.

"The Nigerian Navy Ship VICTORY will keep up the pressure on these criminals until full security is restored in the maritime area," he added.
