Lagos Closes Six Steel Companies for Environmental Issues

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has shut down six iron and steel companies in the Odogunyan Industrial Layout, Ikorodu. This is due to alleged environmental violations.

LASEPA announced this on its official X handle on Monday.

The agency said its Enforcement Team carried out the operation based on instructions from the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab.

The statement said, "The enforcement exercise, carried out by the Agency’s Enforcement team, was in line with the directive of the Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, as part of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring strict compliance with environmental regulations."

LASEPA explained that this action is part of the Lagos State Government’s efforts to protect public health and ensure that industries meet environmental standards.

The companies affected by this move are Germini Steel Nigeria Limited, Top Steel Nigeria Limited, Pulkit Alloy Nigeria Limited, Landcraft Steel Nigeria Limited, Sunflag Steel Nigeria Limited, and African Steel Nigeria Limited.

Inspections at these companies revealed several environmental breaches, which led to their closure.

The agency pointed out that the violations included releasing brown dust, black dust, mill scale, shredded dust, dead dust, and other non-metallic particles. These emissions pose serious threats to air quality, public health, and the environment.

During the enforcement exercise, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, said the agency will keep ensuring that industries follow environmental regulations.

He urged, "All Industries operating within the state to prioritise environmental responsibility by adhering strictly to regulatory requirements, emphasising that compliance is essential for sustainable industrial growth and the well-being of Lagos residents."

Ajayi also mentioned that the state government is dedicated to protecting residents from the effects of industrial pollution. He stated they would not hesitate to penalise companies that break approved environmental standards.

He further encouraged manufacturers to fully comply with environmental laws to support sustainable industrial development and protect the health of residents.

Lagos State has increased its enforcement actions against industries and commercial establishments that violate environmental regulations. This is part of a larger effort to improve air quality, cut down pollution, and safeguard public health.

In the past few months, LASEPA has shut down several facilities throughout the state for issues ranging from high emissions and noise pollution to other environmental infractions.
