Two members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria have been killed in an attack on a cattle camp in the Oheoyya community, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The victims were identified as Ahmadu and Umaru. They were sons of Alhaji Haruna Sale, the South-East Zonal Chairman of MACBAN.
A statement from the association’s National Deputy Director-General, Gidado Siddiki, said the attack happened around 5:00pm on Saturday. Unidentified gunmen invaded the camp during that time.
Siddiki revealed that besides killing the two brothers, the attackers also slaughtered about 40 cows during the raid.
He praised the Enugu State Government and security forces for their quick response. This response helped in recovering the bodies of the victims from the forest for Islamic burial rites.
“We sincerely appreciate the government of Enugu State and the security agencies for their swift intervention in recovering the bodies of the deceased from the forest,” Siddiki stated.
The association urged security agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly. They want the culprits tracked down and brought to justice.
Siddiki reminded everyone that MACBAN members in the South-East are engaged in legitimate cattle rearing, breeding, and trading according to Nigerian laws. He also asked Enugu residents to maintain peaceful coexistence.
He thanked Governor Peter Mbah, traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents for their support. He stressed that good relations between herders and host communities are important for security and business.
Attempts to get a response from the Enugu State Police Command were unsuccessful. The Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, did not reply to phone calls or text messages sent to him at the time of this report.
