Bus driver returns over N400,000 left behind by passenger

A commercial bus driver in Abia State, Onyekachi Ikpendu, returned over N400,000 that a passenger forgot in his bus on Friday.

The passenger, Nkechi John, got on the bus at Uzuakoli, heading to Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia but got down at Ubani Market.

Mrs John, who sells goods, did not realize she left her bag with cash and other personal items in the bus.

When she found out, she quickly went to the terminal where Mr Ikpendu had kept the bag and its contents safe.

Mr Ikpendu shared his story with reporters. He said he had no plans to keep the money because he is happy earning a living honestly.

“I am grateful and content with what I have, therefore, no amount of money I see now will move me to take what does not belong to me,” he said.

He added that returning the money was important to him because he believes that God rewards honesty and good actions.

Mrs John thanked the driver for his honesty. She also thanked Governor Alex Otti of Abia State for building the terminal.

She mentioned that the terminal helped her find the bus and recover her things, saying the money was for her business.

The Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, praised Mr Ikpendu for his honesty and integrity.

Mr Ukaegbu said the driver’s actions set a good example for others in the community.

He stated that this incident shows a positive change in how people in Abia think.

“Our people are showing gratitude to Dr Alex Otti for his good work and exemplary leadership in the state.

“Honestly, the mindset of the people is changing towards doing the right thing even without being compelled,” the commissioner said.

He encouraged residents to keep showing honesty and integrity in their daily lives and called Mr Ikpendu’s actions an example of good citizenship.
