Bayelsa Police Investigate Death of Missing Corps Member

The Bayelsa State Police Command has started looking into the death of a National Youth Service Corps member, Stanley Okebaram. His body was found in the Nembe Local Government Area of the state.

The police spokesperson, Musa Mohammed, confirmed this to PUNCH Metro on Tuesday. He said detectives are quietly investigating how the corps member died.

“The police have begun a discreet investigation into the incident. The body has been taken to the morgue while we complete the probe,” Mohammed said.

Okebaram graduated in civil engineering and was the former president of the Students’ Union Government at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede. He was found dead days after he was reported missing in the community where he was serving.

A security analyst, Zagazola Makama, posted on X on Tuesday that the 27-year-old’s body was taken from a body of water in Nembe. He had allegedly been attacked by unknown assailants.

Before his body was found, the police had started searching for him after he went missing.

Makama reported that the missing person case was filed at about 8:40 p.m. on July 25, 2026, by another corps member, Aribisola Bisi Isaac, along with Adeola Marvelous.

The local government inspector told the police that Okebaram, who was serving in Nembe Creek, was last seen around 8 p.m. on July 24.

“Repeated attempts to call him on his mobile phone were unsuccessful, which raised concerns about his safety,” the sources said.

After the report, police officers went to the creek community. It is about 45 minutes by boat from the Nembe Divisional Headquarters. They began searching for Okebaram and investigating the situation.

The search led to the discovery of Okebaram’s body. Police are still working to find out what happened to him.

His death has raised worries among NYSC members in Bayelsa State. This comes at a time when there are growing concerns about the safety of corps members in remote and riverine communities across Nigeria.

In recent years, the NYSC has seen cases of kidnappings, attacks, and mysterious disappearances involving serving members. This has led to calls for better security and welfare for corps members, especially those in high-risk areas.
