A Nigerian military intelligence officer, Abdussalam Ude, has been killed after trying to fight off armed men who tried to kidnap him at his home in Kurudu, Abuja.

The shooting happened on Monday evening as the senior officer arrived home, according to PRNigeria. The attackers opened fire as he got out of his car and then tried to take him away.

Colonel Ude fought back against the gunmen, even though they were more than him. Sadly, security sources said the attackers shot him several times at close range, leading to his death.

The attack also injured Ude’s wife, his driver, and a security guard, all of whom were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The army has not yet issued a statement about what happened. When asked, the army spokesperson, Appolonia Anele, told PREMIUM TIMES that she would respond to the inquiry later.

Kurudu is an area on the edge of Abuja, with many residents, including army personnel and their families living there in army estates.

Kidnappings have been a big problem in Abuja, especially in the outskirts. Security forces have arrested several suspected kidnappers in the city recently.

PRNigeria reported that Ude had held many important intelligence and counter-terrorism positions in the military. He had been involved in operations against insurgents in Nigeria’s North-east and had also worked on special missions in Chad and France.

The investigation into the attack is ongoing, and security agencies are working to find those responsible.

Colonel Ude was from Enugu State and was set to be promoted to brigadier general next year. His burial is planned for Tuesday at the Mambilla Mosque in Abuja, following Islamic customs.
